Gerard Piqué’s big opportunity

Barcelona’s current injury crisis could see Gerard Piqué make a return to Barcelona’s starting XI, note Marca.

During the international break centre-backs Ronald Araújo and Jules Koundé suffered injuries whilst away on international duty, with both players sidelined for a three months and a month respectively.

As Héctor Bellerín and Sergi Roberto are unavailable as well, the Blaugrana will struggle to find defenders to field against Mallorca.

Barça’s issues with injuries could prove to be Gerard Piqué’s big opportunity to establish himself as a regular starter once again. The relationship between him and the club’s management has soured as he refuses to reduce his salary. The Catalan defender has only played one game so far this season.

According to his contract, his current deal will automatically be extended until June 2024 if he makes an appearance in 35% of the games he is available for. Xavi has been trying to avoid triggering the clause, but he may not have a choice but to start Piqué on the weekend.
