Real Madrid are interested in Manchester City full-back João Cancelo, as reported by AS.
During his time at Valencia (2014-18) he attracted attention for his attacking ability as a right-back, which led him to Pep Guardiola’s City after spells at Inter and Juventus.
Cancelo will be 29 next summer, which would mean a potential deal would have a maximum fee of €40-50m. His contract expires in 2027 and he has a Transfermarkt value of €65m.
Carlo Ancelotti knows him well from the Premier League from his last spell as Everton manager and values his versatility, given that he is now playing exceptionally well at left-back, but can play on his natural right side as he did at Mestalla.
Cancelo is in his fourth season at City, with 138 appearances, eight goals and 19 assists. At Madrid, the left-back position is covered by Ferland Mendy. David Alaba can also play in the position but Ancelotti prefers the Austrian alongside at centre-back, alongside Eder Militao.
Mendy’s contract at the Bernabéu expires in 2025 and his demands for a new deal are above what Madrid believe he should be paid.
According to AS, the Portuguese full-back is already aware of the interest from Madrid and would be happy to sign for a club where several of his Portugal team-mates have succeeded, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe.
