Surprise Barcelona star leading La Liga in open play assists

A somewhat surprising member of the attacking ranks at Barcelona is leading La Liga when it comes to open play assists across the season to date.

The player in question? Robert Lewandowski.

Frontman Lewandowski, of course, has throughout his career been recognised as a world-class goalscorer.

Across stints with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in Germany, the Polish international found the net with historic frequency, including a 41-goal Bundesliga haul in just 29 appearances in 2020/21.

Never, though, did Lewandowski manage more than eight league assists.

That is, potentially, until this season.

Having found goals of his own somewhat more difficult to come by than in years gone by, the 35-year-old has turned his hand towards creating for his teammates, and done an impressive job to date.

All told, with eight gameweeks still to play, Lewandowski has managed eight La Liga assists in in 2023/24.

This not only ties a career-best mark for the veteran striker, but, as per statisticians WhoScored, also represents a season-leading figure from open play in Spain’s top-flight:
