Real Madrid target Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso and young star Florian Wirtz

Real Madrid are currently monitoring the situation of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, as club officials have earmarked the Spaniard as a potential replacement for Carlo Ancelotti. According to Relevo, the club are also huge admirers of Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, who has impressed in the Bundesliga this season.

Alonso is making history by leading his team closer to their first ever Bundesliga title, while they also remain competitive in the Europa League. After a sensational season, the former Madrid player is attracting interest from various elite clubs and Los Blancos are amongst those monitoring his situation.

The head-coach has decided to stay in Germany for at least another season, meaning the likes of Liverpool and arch-rivals Barcelona will now turn their attention to other managerial candidates with both Jürgen Klopp and Xavi Hernandez stepping down at the end of the season. Therefore, Madrid could have a free-hit at attempting to lure him to the club next year should they decided part ways with Ancelotti.

Meanwhile Wirtz, who is at the centre of this successful Leverkusen team, is having a sensational breakthrough season. The 20-year-old has 10 goals and 14 assists in 33 games this season and like his manager he is attracting interest from Europe’s elite clubs.

Although, the La Liga leaders view Wirtz as another ‘generational talent’ they believe that there is no space for another midfielder with his attributes in their overcrowded squad. The club believe Jude Bellingham operates in a similar role and therefore at this moment in time an approach for the player is considered unlikely.
