The brass at La Liga giants Real Madrid beat out direct competition from arch rivals Barcelona to secure a deal to bring in Sergio Martínez from Racing Santander. This comes as Los Blancos prepare to officially unveil the 19-year-old as their latest signing.
The name of midfielder Martínez has taken its place front and centre in the Spanish media headlines over the course of the day to date.
After weeks of negotiations between the two parties, the aforementioned Real Madrid clinched a full accord with the starlet and his entourage, over the terms of a contract.
Despite Martínez having already emerged as a first-team regular at Racing Santander, he has agreed to link up with the Castilla ranks at Valdebebas, with a view to a future senior berth.
And as alluded to above, in committing to terms with Real Madrid, the Spanish youth international has left another of La Liga’s leading clubs disappointed.
As per a report from journalist Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona were also very much interested in a deal to bring in Martínez this summer.
