Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Club abandoned

The La Liga meeting between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon was suspended mid-match, before ultimately being called off entirely.

This came owing to protests on the part of the home crowd in attendance at Vallecas.

The Rayo faithful have long made known their unhappiness with club president Raúl Martín Presa, who has been in a position of power in Madrid since all the way back in 2011. Recent weeks and months, though, have seen tensions reach new heights.

Ahead of their side kicking their campaign back into gear following the international break on Saturday, Rayo’s fanbase therefore came together, to organise a protest against Presa.

This began with the throwing of paper planes and small objects onto the pitch at Vallecas:

After the playing surface had been cleared, however, the home crowd doubled down, throwing everything from paper to rubber balls to food and even a seat onto the grass.

From here, referee Sánchez Martínez made the call to abandon the outing entirely, amid worrying scenes for Rayo Vallecano as a club.
