Pepe Reina set for Villarreal return

Pepe Reina is set to complete a move to Villarreal, as reported by AS.

Over the coming days, his return to the La Liga club will be made official. An agreement has been reached between the parties.

Reina left the club for Liverpool 17 years ago. It was with Villarreal that he took a big step in his career, which has taken him to several of Europe’s top teams, including Liverpool, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Napoli and Aston Villa.

After the departure of Sergio Asenjo, Villarreal’s idea was to find a goalkeeper who could act as a back-up to Gero Rulli. The veteran goalkeeper, who is clear that the starting role is Rulli’s, is happy to join as the second-choice netminder.

Reina will become Villarreal’s second signing of the summer after José Luis Morales, who will be presented on Thursday. Villarreal’s players are returning to pre-season training and are undergoing medicals.

Yesterday Arnaut Danjuma and Francis Coquelin both returned to the club. The forward and midfielder could be set to leave the Yellow Submarine this summer, although no offers have been accepted for them at the time of writing.
