José Luis Mendilibar’s Sevilla future up in the air

Sevilla sporting director Monchi spoke after the club’s Europa League triumph in Budapest on Wednesday.

With qualification for the Champions League in the bag and another Europa League title won, the question at full-time was whether José Luis Mendilibar has a future at the club.

“Let’s enjoy tomorrow in Sevilla, and on Monday we’ll talk. We all know what we want and the decision will be good for everyone,” Monchi said regarding the future of Sevilla head coach Mendilibar.

On winning the club’s seventh Europa League

Monchi added: “The seventh tastes better than any other. The road has been very hard and to finish like this is something none of us could have dreamed of. Making our people happy is the greatest thing there is. The suffering has been worth it.”

Mendilibar also spoke about winning the title with Sevilla after the full-time whistle.

“I don’t know if I can believe it yet,” the Basque coach said.

“We started badly, not looking for space or getting crosses in. They played comfortably but in the second half, we were more aggressive. In extra time we did almost nothing but we were successful with the penalties.

“I am very comfortable here. I have always said so. The lads have taken what I’ve asked of them on board quickly and they’ve given me everything. I think it’s a very good group… maybe they will offer it to me!”
