Deco identifies ‘priority’ target to fill Barcelona’s pivot role for next season

A fresh insight into the ongoing efforts of the powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona to source a new midfielder for the 2024/25 campaign has been forthcoming this afternoon.

The info comes courtesy of Diario Sport, who point towards a leading target as having at long last been identified by Deco and his team.

The player in question? Amadou Onana.

Everton standout Onana has long been tipped for an exit from Goodison Park, amid interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

It is Barcelona, though, who are now ready to move forward with an opening proposal for his services, having already made contact with the entourage of the 22-year-old.

Deco, it is understood, is the leading force behind the push.

This comes with the Portuguese adamant that the player chosen to fill the base of Barca’s midfield moving forward should be one who possesses elite physical qualities, rather than a natural ‘pivot’.

A player boasting a profile similar to that of Blaugrana icon Yaya Touré is being sought, with Onana, as things stand, at the front of the queue.

The one stumbling block in any summer swoop for the Belgian international will likely be financial, with Everton having slapped a 60 million price-tag on their engine room leader.

But Barcelona will nevertheless test the waters imminently, desperate to land a player who will free up the likes of İlkay Gündoğan and Pedri to weave their magic in the final third.
