Atlético Madrid legend hits back at Mesut Özil over blue card jibe

Former Atlético Madrid star Paulo Futre has taken to social media on Friday, to respond to Mesut Özil’s jibe at his ex-employers.

The name of midfielder Özil, of course, took its place centre stage in the headlines in Spain’s capital yesterday evening.

This came upon the German making use of the news surrounding the impending introduction of a ‘blue card’ to football, to aim a less-than-subtle dig at the aforementioned Atlético.

In a post on his official ‘X’ account, Özil reiterated his loyalty to the white half of the Madrid divide, in suggesting that Diego Simeone’s side would struggle to keep as many as six men on the pitch in the case of a sin bin system being implemented:

Ozil’s message inevitably went viral, with the Atlético faithful having made clear their anger with the insinuation.

And, as alluded to above, on Friday, such supporters have been joined by a former Rojiblancos star, in taking firm aim back at Özil.

In direct response to the one-time Real Madrid standout, Paulo Futre – who lined out for Atléti on two separate occasions during his playing days – called attention to his ex-club’s Copa del Rey final victory back in 2013.

The triumph in question came at the home of their city rivals, with Özil, for his part, having been amongst the Real Madrid XI put to the sword:
