Barcelona star to be pushed into starting national role after teammate’s injury blow

A headline member of the first-team setup at La Liga giants Barcelona looks set to play an unexpectedly prominent part in his country’s upcoming round of international fixtures.

The player in question? Marc-André ter Stegen.

Ter Stegen, for his part, was afforded a predicted call-up to the German national team ranks this week.

Amid a fine stretch of individual form at club level, Julian Nagelsmann chose the 31-year-old to act as backup to no.1 Manuel Neuer ahead of the upcoming European Championships.

As alluded to above, though, Ter Stegen’s no.2 status, it would appear, has today been upgraded.

This comes amid confirmation that the aforementioned Neuer has been forced to pull out of the German squad, through injury.

This leaves Die Mannschaft boss Nagelsmann with three options between the posts – Bernd Leno, Oliver Baumann, and the aforementioned Ter Stegen.

Fresh off a superb string of performances, and with 38 international caps to his name, the latter, though, looks the clear favourite to feature against France and the Netherlands over the coming week.
