Barcelona identify Arsenal star as latest free agent target

The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona have turned their attentions towards Arsenal, amid their search for cut-price summer reinforcements.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who have today provided an insight into the latest ongoings behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

Barcelona’s team of directors, it is understood, have already begun sourcing low-cost targets to add to the club’s playing squad with a view to next season.

The Blaugrana’s midfield is viewed as being in particularly urgent need of fresh blood, amid the ongoing injury troubles of all of Gavi, Pedri, and Frenkie de Jong.

With Oriol Romeu expected to be moved on after just a solitary season in Barcelona, meanwhile, a deep-lying ‘pivot’ of sorts, is the most likely profile to be sought.

To this point, widespread speculation has pointed towards Everton star Amadou Onana as having been earmarked as the first-choice of Deco and his transfer team.

Forced to face up to the fact that, if not for at least one major sale, they will simply not be able to meet the asking price laid out by the Toffees, though, Barca have been forced to kickstart a search for more affordable options.

And, as alluded to above, one such player to have seen his name come to the fore amid this search comes in the form of Jorginho.

Italian international Jorginho, as things stand, is set to become a free agent in the summer.

This comes ahead of the expiration of his contract terms with Premier League giants Arsenal.

The former Napoli and Chelsea man has enjoyed a fine season to date, cast into a surprisingly prominent role in Mikel Arteta’s squad owing to the fitness woes being endured by Thomas Partey.

And Barcelona are long-term admirers, having previously set their sights on Jorginho during his time in Serie A.

Not only that, but making a summer joining of forces between the parties all the more possible, is the fact that the 32-year-old himself ‘would be delighted to sign for Barca’.
