Atlético Madrid qualified for the Champions League by beating Elche 2-0 on Wednesday. Head coach Diego Simeone spoke to Movistar after the win.
“We reached the objective, which we deserved, which we worked for and which brings us back to the Champions League for another year, which is very important above all for the club,” Simeone said.
On Antoine Griezmann
“To talk about Griezmann is to talk about one of the players who has scored the most goals in Atlético’s history. He came back this year, found his best form and then got injured. Then he came back and played some good games but he couldn’t find the net. Today he gave the pass to De Paul when he could have taken it himself. That’s the greatness of the player.”
Was it the best away performance of the season?
“Against Betis was also good. The club have dealt with the difficulties in the best way. Savic and Giménez were out for a long time, Reinildo arrived in January… We’ve gotten to here because there are many people in this club who you don’t see and that the club needs to continue to grow. When I arrived at the club they told me they needed four or five Champions League qualifications in a row… We’ve already had 10.”
