Arda Güler confirms he was signed as the ‘heir’ to Real Madrid teammate

Real Madrid starlet Arda Güler has on Monday provided an insight into the reasoning behind his decision to sign for the club last summer.

Youngster Güler, of course, put pen to paper on terms in Spain’s capital ahead of the campaign kicking into gear, after an agreement was reached between Los Blancos, and Turkish giants Fenerbahçe.

At the time, the 19-year-old – widely regarded as one of European football’s standout talents – is understood to have been on the respective wishlists of a whole host of leading clubs from across the continent.

Real Madrid’s arch rivals Barcelona, for one, are known to have been desperate to bring Güler to Catalunya.

In the end, however, the midfielder was convinced that the best route forward, for his short and long-term prospects alike, was taking his talents to the Santiago Bernabéu.

And, as alluded to above, this week, Güler has opened up on one absolutely pivotal factor in as much.

Speaking during a lengthy interview with KAFA Sports, the Turk revealed that, during negotiations with the Real Madrid hierarchy, he was informed of the club’s plans to develop him into the ‘heir’ to an iconic figure in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

The player in question? Luka Modrić:

“Why Real Madrid? Real Madrid told me that I would be Modric’s heir. They offered a long-term project, and I was convinced.”
