The one detail holding up Pau Cubarsí’s Barcelona contract renewal

An insight into the finer details of the ongoing contract negotiations between La Liga giants Barcelona and defensive sensation Pau Cubarsí has today been forthcoming online.

Youngster Cubarsí has of course exploded onto the scene in Catalunya across the year to date.

After first being afforded a chance to impress by boss Xavi amid a personnel crisis at the heart of Barcelona’s backline, La Masia’s latest sensation has since gone on to establish himself as a near-undisputed first-team starter.

Though he has to date managed just 18 appearances in senior football, Cubarsí has already been tipped as a potentially generational defender in the making.

It has therefore come as little surprise to hear of plans already being put in place in Barcelona to tie the Spaniard down for the long-term.

Recent weeks have seen reports mount that the two parties are locked in negotiations, over the terms of a new contract.

And, as alluded to above, on Monday, an insight into the details of such discussions has been provided.

The info comes courtesy of Mundo Deportivo, and points towards a definitive agreement between Barcelona and Cubarsí’s entourage as being close.

The terms being discussed are based around the ‘Lamine Yamal formula’, meaning they will be put in place imminently, before being made official upon the stopper turning 18 next January.

His wages, meanwhile, will increase year-on-year, to reflect Cubarsí’s increasing importance to the Blaugrana cause.

One small detail, however, remains to be ironed out.

This comes in the form of the length of the contract itself.

As per MD, the Barca hierarchy are pushing for their academy product to commit to a six-year extension. Cubarsí himself, though, would rather a five-year deal.

The disagreement is not expected to cause any kind of issue when it comes to an agreement ultimately being reached, but it does represent the one factor holding up Barcelona’s efforts to tie Cubarsí down once and for all.
