“A competition for for Real Madrid & Barcelona”: Osasuna stars fume after Super Cup defeat

A pair of Osasuna stars have this evening made their frustrations public, on the back of the club’s defeat at the hands of Barcelona.

Osasuna and Barca, of course, locked horns a short time ago, in the semi-finals of Supercopa de España.

When all was said and done, it was the latter who ultimately emerged on the right side of the result, in the process booking a meeting with Clásico rivals Real Madrid in the competition’s showpiece.

Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal notched the goals on the night, as Barcelona predictably dominated possession and chances created alike.

Osasuna, to their credit, though, remained very much in with a shot of pegging their heavyweight opponents back throughout, with the game having been largely decided by fine margins.

And it was one such margin which, as alluded to above, has since left two members of Osasuna’s squad disconsolate on the back of the full-time whistle in Riyadh.

The moment in question arrived just shy of the hour mark, when Andreas Christensen was accused of a foul in the build-up to Lewandowski’s opener.

The incident was reviewed by the VAR team in attendance, but it was quickly decided that the contact made was not sufficient to award a foul.

Speaking to Movistar, as cited by Cope, a short time ago, David García in turn made his grievances very much known:

“You’ve all seen it, right? The number of fouls that were called in the first half in favor of Barça.

“For me it is a clear foul. Three minutes later, same play in the opposite half, the other side is whistled. Very obvious to me, but coincidentally or not, when these fouls happen, they always whistle us. It’s obvious.”

A similar sentiment was then echoed by fellow Osasuna star Sergio Herrera, who went as far as to suggest that the Supercopa is intended to be contested by Spanish football’s two biggest clubs:

“It is a competition made for Real Madrid and Barça to play. It should be experienced with our people and the Spanish fans should enjoy it. We come here because it is our profession.”
