Yeray Álvarez: “Athletic’s goal every year has been to get into Europe.”

In and interview that appeared in Mundo Deportivo, Athletic Bilbao’s Yeray Álvarez discussed what the club’s expectations are for this season.

According to Álvarez, Athletic Bilbao have identified qualifying for Europe as their main objective:

“Every year the goal has been to get into Europe and this year it has been made clear that this is our main objective. It is something we have fought for in recent years, but it is not easy to get there and every year it is going to be more complicated. For us it is an incentive and a motivation to say that we want to enter Europe.”

Athletic Bilbao failed to qualify for any of the European competitions last season, but they hope to do so in their upcoming La Liga campaign that is set to kick off against Mallorca tomorrow at 17.30 local time.

Álvarez also commented on his initial impressions of new club president Jon Uriarte:

“I have met him four times briefly. We had a chat with him and he is a person who is going to focus on his work and we are going to focus on ours.”
