Xavi set for new role at Barcelona

La Liga giants Barcelona are ready to afford a new role within the club to head coach Xavi Hernández.

That’s according to TV3, who have on Wednesday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

Xavi, as things stand, is of course primed to step down from his role on the Barcelona bench in the summer.

Despite having a year to run on his contract, the Spaniard has long made clear that he feels the best route forward for all parties is a parting of ways.

And yet, those in a position of power at the Camp Nou have not yet given up hope of convincing the club’s one-time midfield standout to reverse his decision, and stay put for another season.

Barca president Joan Laporta is particularly keen for Xavi to remain, a firm believer in the talents boasted by the Spanish tactician.

In turn, it should perhaps not come as a great surprise to hear that, this week, the Blaugrana brass have moved to keep Xavi linked to the club, in whatever way they can.

As per the aforementioned TV3:

‘Xavi will be the new ambassador of the Barça Foundation, a position also held by athlete Àlex Roca. Xavi will continue to have this responsibility once he stops being coach of Barça.’

An event has already been scheduled to make the 44-year-old’s new position official, expected to be held in Catalunya over the days ahead.

Despite it being reiterated that Xavi’s new role will not be directly linked to his future as Barcelona manager, the move is widely viewed as ‘another example of the club’s desire for the Terrassa coach not to leave the bench’.
