The latest post-match press conference held by Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández has given rise to a number of noteworthy takeaways.
This, of course, comes amid what has proven a hugely disappointing evening for all associated with Barcelona.
The Blaugrana marked their return to action a short time ago, hopeful of defending their Supercopa de España crown, in a showdown with arch rivals Real Madrid.
When all was said and done, however, Xavi and co. were provided with something of a footballing lesson.
Owing to a Vinícius Jr. hat-trick, added to by Rodrygo late on, it was Real who emerged on the right side of a comfortable 4-1 scoreline.
On the back of the full-time whistle bringing a close to proceedings in Riyadh, it should in turn come as little surprise to hear of the mood across the Barcelona fanbase being something of a sombre one.
Speaking to the media a short time ago, head coach Xavi, whose job is beginning to look under real threat, therefore made use of the opportunity to send a message of apology to the Blaugrana faithful:
“We lacked everything. We’ve played one of the worst matches of the season. I want to apologize to the fans.”
He continued:
“As a Barça fan, I am destroyed. I’m sorry for the fanbase. This is not the type of match we should play.”
From here, Xavi, to his credit, was also sure to congratulate his side’s Clásico rivals, for a deserved victory on the night:
“Congrats to Real Madrid. [It was] a deserved win.”
