The departure of now-former Barcelona head coach Xavi spells altogether positive news when it comes to the prospects of João Cancelo with the club.
That’s according to Marca, who have this week provided an insight into the situation.
Full-back Cancelo of course spent this past season on loan in Catalunya’s capital, from Premier League champions Manchester City.
And, from a production standpoint, the Portuguese went on to enjoy a solid campaign, on his way to four goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.
Despite as much, however, the aforementioned Xavi, it is understood, was ready to cut his losses on Cancelo this summer.
The 44-year-old was left less than impressed by the versatile right-back’s performances in a number of Barcelona’s most crucial outings down the season’s final stretch, no doubt eager to bring in a more defensively sound option with a view to next season as a result.
With Xavi now gone, and Hansi Flick having been installed in his place, however, the odds of Cancelo’s Blaugrana stint being extended have all of a sudden increased.
As per the aforementioned Marca:
‘Although Xavi was thinking of not renewing his loan, the Sports Directorate has always been in favour of doing so.’
Deco and co. are understood to be of the opinion that Cancelo was not put in a favourable position to succeed by the club’s ex-headmaster, remaining firm believers in his ability to contribute in a positive manner next season as a result.
