Why Luka Modrić was angry after being substituted in Real Madrid’s draw with Real Betis

An insight into the reasoning behind Luka Modrić’s uncharacteristic anger during Real Madrid’s meeting with Real Betis has been provided.

Amid ongoing efforts to put some distance between themselves and shock title challengers Girona atop the La Liga table, Los Blancos made the trip to the Estadio Benito Villamarín.

When all was said and done, however, they were forced to make do with a share of the spoils, after Jude Bellingham’s opener early in the 2nd-half was cancelled out by Aitor Ruibal.

On a largely disappointing night all told for Real, it should in turn come as little surprise to hear of one of the club’s star performers being spotted looking less than satisfied in Seville.

What did come as a surprise, though, was the identity of the player in question.

After being hauled off 20 minutes from time against Betis, Luka Modrić, so often the picture of composure, was caught on camera lashing out on his way to the bench, kicking a number of water bottles in frustration.

Speaking to the media post-match, Carlo Ancelotti was therefore drawn on the situation, but went on to admit that he was unsure of just what led to the Croatian veteran’s outburst.

An explanation for as much, though, has since been forthcoming online.

The info comes by way of Defensa Central, who have revealed that Modrić was in fact annoyed with himself.

This came after the 38-year-old failed to meet his own high standards, misplacing a number of passes and shots at goal against Betis.

It is in turn assured that no problem exists between Modrić and Carlo Ancelotti, with the pair having talked through the situation prior to their return to Madrid.
