Why Eden Hazard failed at Real Madrid

Eden Hazard announced his retirement from football. The 32-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Real Madrid in June.

Rumours about his future have been swirling since his departure and he has confirmed that he is calling it a day on his career. The Belgian winger has had a sparkling career in which he played for three teams. He played 188 games for Lille, 352 games for Chelsea and 76 games for Real Madrid.

He will be remembered mainly for his years in London, where he was one of the best players in the Premier League. He is also fondly remembered in France, where he was a breakout star as a teenager for Lille.

Sadly his time at Real Madrid won’t be remembered so well. He joined Los Blancos in 2019 for €115 million and never came close to repaying the transfer fee. Constant injuries, turning up to pre-seasons overweight and a lack of consistency were just some of the factors that led to Hazard’s downfall.

Overall, however, the Belgian had a huge impact on modern football and football fans all over the world have reacted sadly to the news that he is hanging up his boots.
