“What more does he have to do?” – Father of Real Madrid legend Nacho on son’s inclusion in Spain squad for Euro 2024

The father of Real Madrid captain Nacho is perplexed at his son’s standing with the National team ahead of Euro 2024.

As Euro 2024 approaches, national teams are starting to unveil their preliminary squads. For Spain, the final squad will be announced on May 27th, just ahead of the Champions League final.

Uncertainty looms over the centre-back positions for Luis de la Fuente, with Nacho’s inclusion being debated. His omission from the World Cup squad despite captaining a successful Madrid side, for example, has stirred debate.

Chema Fernández, Nacho’s father, expressed his sentiments on SER Deportivos, questioning: “What more does he have to do to earn a spot in the Euros?

He further remarked on the contrasting opinions about Nacho’s form, observing: “(playing for) Real Madrid amplifies both the good and the bad aspects.”

Fernández highlighted the disparity in Nacho’s treatment, stating: “He’s had a stellar season, yet two mistakes have overshadowed his performances.” referencing Nacho’s two red cards.

It will remain to be seen whether Nacho gets the call-up to the Spanish squad for the Euros, which begin a month from today. A call-up for the Madrid captain would see his first appearance in a major tournament for Spain since Euro 2018.
