The end of an era as Sergio Busquets retires from international football

Sergio Busquets has retired from international football. The Barcelona midfielder realised that his time was up with the recent departure of Luis Enrique as head coach of La Roja.

Relevo report that before the World Cup, Busquets was hesitating about whether to quit now or after the Nations League next summer. His future was directly linked to that of Luis Enrique. Busquets believed that the best thing for the national team was that the change in the dugout was accompanied by a change in the captaincy.

He has nothing against new Spain boss Luis de la Fuente. The relationship between the two is believed to be very good, but Busquets feels that it wasn’t right to continue as captain in a new phase for only six months. He believes it is better for everyone that the new head coach of La Roja lays the foundations with a captain who will be going to Euro 2024.

Busquets was a World Cup winner with Spain in 2010 and also helped La Roja win Euro 2012. He was capped 143 times at senior international level.
