Real Madrid matched an 88-year benchmark with win over Barcelona

A remarkable statistic, highlighting the significance of Real Madrid’s victory over Barcelona on Sunday night, has come to the fore online.

The latest edition of El Clásico, of course, played to completion a short time ago.

A pulsating affair, featuring no fewer than five goals, ultimately culminated in the Santiago Bernabéu hosts emerging on the right side of a 3-2 result.

As much came despite Barcelona taking the lead not once, but twice on the night, only for goals on the part of all of Vinícius Jr, Lucas Vázquez and, finally, Jude Bellingham to all but end Barcelona’s La Liga title hopes.

Real Madrid have now opened up what looks an insurmountable 11-point advantage atop the table, in with a real shot of a domestic and European double.

And yet, their latest three-point haul on Sunday did not only prove significant with a view to the current campaign.

In addition, it marked a momentous one from a historical standpoint.

This comes with Los Blancos having put their arch rivals to the sword in a competitive fixture for the 3rd time in a row this season.

The last time they managed as much? A whopping 88 years ago…
