Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo suspended by Portugal

Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo has this weekend seen an official case opened against him by the Football Association of the Portuguese national team.

This of course comes fresh off a tumultuous week all told for the veteran frontman.

Left bemused by the public comments of manager Jorge Jesus in response to his lack of minutes during the Nations League, Ronaldo responded by abandoning the Portuguese camp.

The 41-year-old then released a lengthy statement, outlining his position, apologising for his actions, and explaining the situation from his point of view.

Ronaldo’s announcement also included confirmation that he expected to be hit with a punishment on the part of his country.

And as alluded to above, on Saturday, an official statement regarding as much has surfaced online. As per a report from journalist Fabrizio Romano:

‘Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Federation after a disciplinary case was opened. Cristiano Ronaldo has been “provisionally suspended”, now waiting for the final verdict and decisions about the case. It was Cristiano himself who suggested a punishment in a public statement after he apologised for leaving Portugal’s camp. The official statement from the Portuguese Federation:

“The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7. Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process.”
