Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal: “We’re not happy with the fixture schedule”

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has joined manager Carlo Ancelotti in expressing his anger towards the demanding fixture list.

By the end of Saturday, Madrid will have played three matches in less than a week. They comfortably beat Cádiz 3-0 last Sunday and they prepare to face Napoli tonight in a crucial Champions League encounter.

The Spanish giants will then play host to relegation-threatened Granada on Saturday evening.

As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Carvajal has reflected on the difficult schedule.

He said: “The fixture schedule is very demanding, it’s difficult.

“In the end, it’s us who play, we are not happy with the schedules.

“I totally agree with Carlo Ancelotti and everyone else who has said the same. It’s very difficult to travel every few days and play.”

Los Blancos are currently dealing with an injury crisis in central midfield and Ancelotti believes the demanding fixture list has contributed to the club’s injury woes.

The Italian manager said: “The calendar is unsustainable. We can’t choose it, UEFA, FIFA and La Liga do.

“They have to realise what is happening. In the future it’s not going to get better, it’s going to get worse because we’re going to have a World Cup and a Champions League with more games.

“A strong players’ union could be the key to change it. The most important part of ‘soccer’ is the players and when the most important players are missing, an important part of the show is missing.”
