Barcelona president Joan Laporta has praised Xavi Hernández following the club’s 2-1 comeback win against Porto, which has put them in pole position to advance to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
The Barca manager has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks due to some poor results. The Catalans drew against Rayo Vallecano at the weekend and fell to defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk.
A late defeat in El Clásico added to the pressure on the Spanish manager, while poor results coupled with long-term injuries to important players such as Gavi, has put the Spanish giants in a difficult position.
As reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Laporta is delighted with the way that Xavi has managed to deal with injury setbacks and improved results.
He said: “I’m so happy for Xavi, he deserves it. He has really had to overcome difficult situations, with injured players.
“There was a lot of joy to see the goals of the Joaos, Pedri running 13km acting as Gavi. Also with Frenkie, we’re unbeatable.”
Xavi will now turn his side’s attention to Sunday’s clash against Atlético Madrid.
