Atlético Madrid’s Pablo Barrios set for extended spell on the sidelines

Atlético Madrid have been dealt a considerable blow on the personnel front.

This comes amid confirmation of the extent of the injury suffered by midfielder Pablo Barrios.

En route to Atléti’s 3-1 Champions League downing of Feyenoord on Tuesday night, youngster Barrios was forced into a premature departure early in the second half.

A series of medical tests, in turn, were carried out on the knee of the 20-year-old earlier today.

And, late this evening, the results have been forthcoming.

As per an official statement across Atlético’s website and social media platforms, Barrios has picked up a torn meniscus, the extent of which will determine whether or not he is forced under the knife:

“Pablo Barrios suffers a meniscal tear. In the next days, the definitive treatment for the recovery will be decided.”

Though it is as of yet unclear just how long Barrios will be sidelined, he is unlikely to be available for selection to boss Diego Simeone this side of the new year.
