Yesterday Real Betis defeated Girona 2-1 at the Estadio Benito Villamarín thanks to a brace scored by Borja Iglesias.
This was Real Betis fifth win in the league this season, only losing to Real Madrid so far. They currently sit third in La Liga, gaining 15 points out of a possible of 18, thus consolidating themselves in the Champions League places in the league standings.
As noted by Marca, with their win over the weekend, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have equalled the record for best start to a season in Real Betis’ history. The only other time Los Verdiblancos had managed to win five games in the first six matchdays of the first division was with Irishman Patrick O’Connell in the 1934-35 season. That same season they went on to win their only league title to date.
Real Betis have also won their first four games at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, a feat which they last achieved in the 2001-02 season.
