Rafa Márquez sparks internal anger at Barcelona with comments on replacing Xavi

Barcelona Atlètic head coach Rafael Márquez finds himself in hot water with the powers that be at the club on Sunday.

This comes owing to comments made by the Mexican regarding the soon-to-be vacant hotseat with the Blaugrana’s senior side.

Speaking to the media late on Saturday night, Márquez was drawn on the prospect of replacing Xavi Hernández at the helm in Catalunya this summer.

This of course comes after the latter dropped something of a bombshell, in announcing his intention to move on upon the season’s close.

And, safe to say, Márquez’s ensuing response has since not gone down at all well behind the scenes in Barcelona.

Asked directly whether he would be ‘happy’ in the case of the Blaugrana brass affording him the opportunity to make the step up to the first-team, the 44-year-old explained:

“You can’t say no to an opportunity like this. And if it comes, I will be available and try to do my best.”

As confirmed by Diario Sport this evening, these comments ‘were not liked at all’ by Barca president Joan Laporta and his staff.

In fact, it is claimed that the ‘anger was great’ with Márquez, accused of an ‘inopportune and clumsy gesture’ which did more harm than good.

No punishment is expected to be coming the way of the former Blaugrana defender, but work will likely need to be done in an effort to get back in the good books of the Catalan club.
