Nahuel Molina: 2 – Made the fatal error that led to the first goal, giving the ball away cheaply near his own box. Sent off late on after he lashed out at Álex Baena’s provocation.

Stefan Savić: 6.5

Axel Witsel: 7 – Looks at home in a new centre-back role assigned to him by Diego Simeone.

Reinildo: 7 – Solid game and prevented a sure goal with a superb sliding challenge.

Yannick Carrasco: 6.5 – Almost headed the ball over the line, but was denied by Rulli.

Marcos Llorente: 5

Thomas Lemar: 6.5 – Found Álvaro Morata in the box on occasion with some clever deliveries.

João Felix: 6 – Not given much room to exploit by the compact Villarreal structure.

Álvaro Morata: 6.5 – Won most of his duels against the Villarreal backline but failed to create anything productive.

Antoine Griezmann: 6.5 – Created a couple of chances.

Matheus Cunha: 7 – Denied a goal seconds after coming on by Rulli. Hit the crossbar with a header.

VILLARREAL

Gerónimo Rulli: 8.5 – Exceptional night, made some great saves. A superb save to prevent Carrasco’s header was the highlight.

Juan Foyth: 7

Raúl Albiol: 7.5 – Swept away all danger, scoring a game high of nine clearances.

Pau Torres: 7 – Lucky to be let off after running into trouble in the first half, but a solid performance otherwise.

Alfonso Pedraza: 6.5 – Assisted Moreno’s goal in the dying stages.

Étienne Capoue: 7

Dani Parejo: 6

Yéremy Pino: 7 – Scored the all-important opener with a great finish, pouncing on Molina’s mistake.

Giovani Lo Celso – 6.5

Nicholas Jackson: 6.5

Gerard Moreno: 5 – A terribly lacklustre performance. Hit the crossbar with an open goal staring and was clumsy on the ball throughout. Scored the second late on when Atléti had committed forward.

SUBSTITUTES:

Álex Baena: 6.5 – Provoked Molina into an angry reaction which led to the Argentine seeing red.
