As reported by Relevo, Diego Simeone hopes that Antoine Griezmann can stay at Atlético Madrid, despite the financial consequences the club might pay by playing him regularly.
The Frenchman joined Los Colchoneros on loan from Barcelona in 2021. Atléti had the option to extend the deal by one more season, which they did this summer.
However, according to the agreement, Atlético Madrid are obliged to purchase Griezmann in June 2023 for €40 million if he plays in at least 50% of the games that he is available.
Despite the 31-year-old wanting to stay at the club and being part of Simeone’s plans, Atlético Madrid might not be in the financial position to pay Barcelona the fee come next summer.
The Madrid-based outfit doesn’t want to find itself in a position where they do not play Griezmann so that they do not fulfil the clause.
Barcelona do not necessarily want to keep the French forward, meaning the two clubs may have to sit down and come to a compromise.
