Only one Spanish team in the Champions League knock-out stages for the first time this century

Real Madrid is the only team from Spain to have qualified for the 2022-2023 Champions League round of 16.

As noted by AS, this is the first time this century that only one Spanish team made it to the knock-out stages of the competition.

Last night Barcelona suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. Inter Milan’s 4-0 win against Viktoria Plzeň earlier meant that they were mathematically eliminated from Champions League and qualified for the Europa League.

Just over 600km West from the Catalan coast, Atlético Madrid also failed to progress in Europe’s elite competition. They were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayer Leverkusen. With only one game left, Diego Simeone’s side will not be able to catch up with Porto, who are 4 points ahead of them in the group.

Despite Sevilla beating København, they will not be able to catch up with Borussia Dortmund in second place.
