The Royal Spanish Football Federation have this afternoon confirmed that Luis de la Fuente has seen an extension clause in his contract activated.
De la Fuente, for his part, has been in charge of the Spanish national team since back in December of 2022.
As much came about after Luis Enrique’s decision to step down on the back of La Roja’s elimination from the Qatar World Cup.
And he has since gone on to do a fine job, guiding Spain to glory at last year’s Nations League, before overseeing a top of the table finish en route to qualification for this summer’s European Championships.
In turn, on Thursday, it should come as little surprise to hear of De la Fuente’s efforts being rewarded.
As per an official statement across the website and social media platforms of the RFEF, the former Sevilla and Athletic Club star has seen an option to extend the terms of his contract activated.
De la Fuente, as a result, will remain on the bench in Spain until 2026 – the next World Cup year:
‘The Management Commission of the RFEF has approved, in its session this Thursday, to authorize the bodies of the Federation to exercise the renewal clause included in the contract of the national coach, Luis de la Fuente. This will allow the expansion of the relationship between both parties until 2026, the year in which the next FIFA World Cup will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
‘The Management Commission considers that the renewal of De la Fuente is a necessary step for the national team and for the institution that directs football in Spain, by providing stability to the national team in preparation for the Euro Cup, which will begin in June.’
