Official: Luka Modrić signs new deal at Real Madrid and becomes club captain

Real Madrid veteran Luka Modrić has signed a new contract extension, which keeps him at the club until June 2025. The midfielder will also become the new captain of Los Blancos following Nacho Fernandez’s exit from the club.

The 38-year-old’s current deal was due to expire this summer, however he has now put pen to paper to extend his stay in the Spanish capital for another year at least. The Croatia international has made 534 appearances for Real Madrid and has notched 122 goal contributions during this period.

Modrić is one of the most decorated player’s in the club’s history with 26 trophies to his name. The playmaker was part of the side that won six Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles.

Modrić joined the Spanish giants in 2012, moving from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for €38.5m. Since then, he has established himself as a regular part of the first-team setup and went on to become one of the first names on the team sheet.

With Madrid investing heavily in central midfield, Modrić has found his game time limited in recent seasons. However, due to an injury crisis last season, manager Carlo Ancelotti relied heavily on the experienced player.

He made 46 appearances across all competitions last season, albeit the majority of these being off the bench. During this period, he scored two goals and provided six assists.

His long-time midfield partner Toni Kroos has already confirmed his retirement from football this summer.
