Barcelona teenager signs first senior contract just days after 16th birthday

Barcelona academy prospect Toni Fernández has decided to stay at the club and sign his first professional contract just two days after turning 16 years-old.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the Barcelona-born player had proposals from several clubs across Europe, however Fernández has put pen to paper ending all speculation about his future. The attacker has been training with the first-team and is expected to be part of the pre-season squad.

New manager Hansi Flick is a huge admirer of the player and wants him as part of the first-team setup next season. Fernández is regarded as one of La Masia’s best products and therefore the club do not want to rush his development.

The Spaniard is a versatile forward who can operate on either flank or as a striker. His new deal is expected to run until at least 2027 with a further one year extension likely to be included in the deal.

He moved to the club in 2018 from Espanyol and has attracted interest from the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus and Manchester City but has decided to extend his stay with the La Liga giants.
