Official | Barcelona appoint Hansi Flick as head coach

Barcelona have announced the appointment of Hansi Flick as the club’s new manager on a two-year contract. The former Bayern Munich and Germany head coach will replace Xavi Hernández in the Barca dugout.

Flick has been unemployed since last September after he was relived of his duties as Germany manager due to their group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup. However, the 59-year-old manager has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years, winning the UEFA Champions League with Bayern four years ago. Flick guided to the Bundesliga giants to a historic treble in 2020 before he took the Germany national team job in the summer of 2021.

“FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement for the German to become men’s first team football coach until 30 June 2026,” Barca said in a club statement.

Barca have had interest in the German coach for a long time with club president Joan Laporta enquiring about his availability, while he was still in charge of Bayern. However, Flick had already committed to the Germany job and the club therefore turned their attention elsewhere.

Since Xavi announced his decision to step down at the end of the season, Laporta reopened dialogue with Flick’s camp. His chances of becoming the manager of the La Liga giants were dealt a huge blow last month when Xavi announced he would fulfil the entirety of his contract instead of stepping down.

Despite this, the club decided to part ways with the Spaniard. Xavi took charge of his final match on Sunday in the 2-1 win in Sevilla, after agreeing to give up the final year of his salary.
