The brass at La Liga giants Barcelona have this week made an important call on the transfer front. This comes with a view to the club’s options at centre-forward for the season ahead.
Hansi Flick’s Blaugrana squad is of course currently lacking in a natural goalscorer. Following the departure of Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer, the Camp Nou brass have long been hard at work to land prime target Julián Alvarez as a replacement.
A deal for the Argentine, however, is proving hugely difficult to come by. For this reason, Deco and co. had previously rested easy in the knowledge that Ferran Torres, if required, could step in to lead the line on a permanent basis in 2026/27.
But the World Cup winner now appears to be closing on a move to France with Paris Saint-Germain.
So, where does this leave Barcelona in the case of Ferran moving on, and Atlético Madrid refusing to allow Alvarez to join a direct La Liga rival?
An insight into as much has this week arrived, courtesy of Diario Sport’s David Bernabéu:
“With Ferran’s departure, whether Julián comes or not, Barça are going to sign a striker.”
A shortlist of alternative targets has therefore already been drawn up in the Camp Nou offices, which looks increasingly likely to come into play before the window slams shut.
