Matt Doherty to make Atlético Madrid debut

Having arrived on the deadline day of the winter transfer window from Tottenham Hotspur, right-back Matt Doherty has yet to make his debut almost a month on.

As reported by Marca, Diego Simeone showed a preference for bringing in a backup for Nahuel Molina as opposed to fast-forwarding the signing of Çağlar Söyüncü instead of bringing him later on a free.

Now, it appears the Irish international will finally get his chance to prove himself. Following the Madrid derby, Molina received his fifth yellow card of the season, resulting in a suspension for the upcoming Sevilla game.

Doherty will have a difficult task on his hands as he’ll be in charge of covering left-sided forwards Lucas Ocampos and Bryan Gil, often the two most dangerous players that Sevilla make use of in attack.

Simeone will also have trouble covering the team’s other flank. With the injuries to both Reinildo Mandava and Sergio Reguilón, either Mario Hermoso or Yannick Carrasco will likely take up that position. The latter would require a return to a three-centre-back system, which Doherty would have become familiar with under Antonio Conte at Tottenham.
