Marcelo Bielsa could return to Athletic Club

Marcelo Bielsa could be on his way back to Athletic Club, according to AS.

Iñaki Arechabaleta, a candidate to be the next president of Athletic, sees Bielsa as the next man for the job after Marcelino announced his departure from the club.

The Argentinian coach has accepted Arechabaleta’s proposal to return to the club, according to Radio Popular.

“He gave us the best season of the century”, Arechabaleta said recently.

Arechabaleta has approached Bielsa thanks to José Mari Amorrortu, who has a close relationship with the Argentinian after they both worked together 11 years ago at Lezama and has acted as a middle man.

Bielsa’s first spell at Athletic was from 2011 to 2013 and he managed to take the team to the final of the Copa del Rey and the Europa League, but failed to win any titles.

The former Leeds coach won over the fans during his time in Bilbao, but also a handful of detractors among the club’s workers.

The second year was not a successful one, but in Bilbao, many remember him fondly. After leaving San Mamés in 2013, El Loco joined Marseille in 2014.

Should Arechabaleta win the elections on Friday 24 June, the much-loved manager could be back in Spain, after earning legendary status at Elland Road.
