Manuel Pellegrini: “This was not a Mourinho-Pellegrini match.”

Last night Real Betis defeated AS Roma 2-1 in the Europa League group stages.

In his post-match interview that appeared on Estadio Deportivo, Manuel Pellegrini praised the performance of Real Betis:

“I think the team that played better won, especially in the first forty-five minutes. They hadn’t had a shot on goal before the penalty and Betis had several dangerous plays and a shot against the post. We equalised and in the second half the match became more balanced, but we played a good game, we were superior and we won.”

The Chilean coach was also asked about whether there is a Pellegrini-Mourinho rivalry:

“This is not a Mourinho-Pellegrini match. We have shared leagues in Spain and England, but there are no personal problems between us. The important thing was to play well and win the three points. The relationship has never deteriorated. It’s not the coaches who play, it’s the teams.”

He also opened up about Nabil Fekir’s latest injury:

“Fekir has picked up another injury, we do not know if it is the same, but it is in the same leg. We’ll see what the medical report says, but he will be out for a few weeks.”
