Barcelona consider Iñigo Martínez as Gerard Piqué replacement

Barcelona are eyeing the option of signing Iñigo Martínez to replace Gerard Piqué, communicate AS.

The 31-year-old was linked with a move to the Blaugrana throughout the summer, however nothing concrete materialised before deadline day.

However, it is believed that Barcelona are considering to make a move for the Basque defender during the January transfer window as long as he comes on the cheap and recovers fully from his knee injury.

The Catalan side want him as an alternative to Piqué, whose contract is set to expire in June 2023. However, Xavi would be keen to bring in Martínez this winter, as Piqué has a clause in his deal that would see his contract extended automatically by a further year if he makes an appearance in at least 35% of the games he is available for this season.

Martínez’s contract with Athletic Bilbao is set to expire in June 2023 as well and this would be the last opportunity for the Basque club to receive a transfer fee for his departure.
