Mallorca stars take aim at Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino with celebation jibe

A number of RCD Mallorca stars made use of the opportunity to poke fun at Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino, on the back of the meeting between the clubs last night.

Mallorca, and Sociedad, are of course fresh off locking horns in the 2nd leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final tie between the clubs.

After a goalless stalemate in the opener at Son Moix, it was the turn of Imanol’s La Real to act as hosts, in a highly-anticipated affair at Anoeta.

When all was said and done, though, it was underdogs Mallorca who emerged on the right side of the result.

After the clubs could not be separated across a further 120 minutes, the clash was sent to a penalty shootout, with Javier Aguirre’s troops having held their nerve, to book an unlikely spot in the Copa del Rey showpiece.

Post-match on Tuesday, it should in turn come as little surprise to hear that Mallorca’s stars were in altogether jubilant mood.

And, as alluded to above, amid their celebrations at Anoeta, several members of the Bermellones’ ranks took advantage of the chance to aim a less-than-subtle dig at a key member of their defeated opponents’ midfield ranks.

After netting a last-gasp winner in a La Liga outing at Son Moix two weeks ago, Mikel Merino responded by making an ‘L’ shape with his fingers, which he then pressed to his lips.

As much was taken as an insult on the part of Mallorca’s fans and players alike, despite Merino post-match having assured that it marked a tribute to his partner, Lola.

In turn, on Tuesday night, Aguirre’s players came together on the pitch to mimic the action, a clear jibe at Real Sociedad and Merino:
