Lionel Messi is facing a possible 4-game ban after receiving a red card in Sunday night’s Spanish Supercopa final defeat to Athletic Club, according to ESPN.
The red card was Messi’s first ever in an official match for Barcelona. The Argentine is certain to miss two matches and may face another two matches out, depending on how the competition committee categorise the sending off. The ban will be served across LaLiga and the Copa del Rey.
Messi will miss Thursday’s Copa del Rey clash with Segunda B side Cornella and next weekend’s LaLiga game against Elche. If the ban ends up being four games, he could be absent for the next round of the Copa del Rey if Barcelona beat Cornella and the home match against Athletic Club on January 31.
