Life for Barcelona without Pedri

Barcelona confirmed on Friday that Pedri picked up an injury against Manchester United and the midfielder could be out of action for up to a month.

Head coach Xavi must now look within his squad for a player capable of filling the gap left by Pedri in the team.

With everyone fit, Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi are likely to fill the other midfield positions, but there are questions as to who will be the fourth man in midfield.

Xavi has been playing with four midfielders but he opted to go back to a 4-3-3 with two wingers against Cádiz on Sunday night, with Sergi Roberto playing alongside De Jong and Gavi in midfield.

Gavi will not be available for Thursday’s game against Manchester United, as he is suspended.

Franck Kessié is probably Xavi’s first choice to play as the fourth midfielder. He has been involved in the absence of Busquets.

Sergi Roberto is not as creative as Pedri, but he gives an important physical edge to the midfield department.

Of all the available options, perhaps Pablo Torre is the one who is most similar to Pedri. The talented Spaniard can play the final pass and is capable of scoring.

The problem is that he has played very little this season, both in the first team and in the reserve team. Maybe in the league games he will have opportunities, but it is difficult to imagine Xavi giving him responsibility at Old Trafford.

If Pedri is out for a month, he will miss the games against Cádiz, United, Almería, Real Madrid, Valencia, Athletic Club and potentially another Europa League match.
