La Liga basement dwellers Almería break historic winless streak in Pepe Mel’s debut

La Liga bottom club Almería enjoyed an evening to remember on Sunday.

This came as the Indálicos, at long, long last, secured a first victory of the campaign.

Almería made the trip to the Estadio Gran Canaria a short time ago, for a meeting with mid-table Las Palmas.

The clash marked the club’s first under the watch of new head coach Pepe Mel, after the struggling Gaizka Garitano was sent on his way earlier this week.

And, safe to say, Mel’s impact was quickly felt…

Despite having been completely dominated when it came to possession and shots at goal alike, a solitary strike on the part of Léo Baptistão ensured that Almería emerged on the right side of a 1-0 result.

And, in the process, the Andalusian outfit brought to an end what had come as a historically dismal run of form.

After last week seeing their side etch its name into the annals of Spanish football as the first team to ever see out the first 28 fixtures of a La Liga season without a win, the Almería faithful, on Sunday, at long last have a reason to celebrate.
