Speaking to COPE, Atlético Madrid captain Koke explained that he believes his team should be considered European champions if the Champions League cannot be completed this season.
Atleti knocked out last year’s Champions League winners Liverpool at Anfield as the visitors came from two goals down in extra-time to win 3-2 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate in the last-16.
“When I talk to my friends, I tell them that this is Atleti’s Champions League. If everything is suspended, this year we are champions of the Champions League. Like in boxing, we have eliminated the champion.“
Diego Simeone’s side currently sit in sixth place in La Liga, two points off Sevilla in third, with 11 games remaining.
“First we have to think about La Liga. The Champions League does not return until August. We have to focus on La Liga and get into the Champions League. If we don’t, it will be a failure for us.”
