Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho had identified one leading transfer target whom the club ultimately failed to secure the services of this summer.
That’s according to The Athletic, who point towards Enzo Fernández as the player in question.
Midfielder Enzo of course took his place centre stage in the transfer chatter surrounding Real Madrid throughout much of the recently closed window.
Amid claims of those in a position of power in Spain’s capital seeking out a differential profile for the club’s engine room ranks, the Argentine international was highlighted as a leading candidate.
In the end, however, Los Blancos refused to meet the massive demands set out by Chelsea, with Enzo having gone on to sign for namesake Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City.
And as since revealed by Real Madrid insider Mario Cortegana, writing for The Athletic, one individual who would indeed have been delighted to have the 25-year-old at his disposal at the Santiago Bernabéu this season is José Mourinho:
‘Mourinho’s favourite option was Enzo Fernandez, despite club sources denying it.’
