José Giménez not in favour of giving Real Madrid a guard of honour

Atlético Madrid defender José María Giménez is not keen on giving Real Madrid a guard of honour, he said after their 2-0 loss away against Athletic Club.

Real Madrid sealed the 2021/22 La Liga after a 4-0 win vs Espanyol, and with their next league game being the derby against Atleti at Wanda Metropolitano, tradition suggests that Los Colchoneros would give them a guard of honour. Giménez, however, does not agree.

In quotes picked up by Marca, the Uruguayan said, “A guard of honour to Real Madrid? We congratulate them, but we have a lot of respect for our fans.”

Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak is also not in favour of the tradition: “I’m one of those who don’t like to give or receive the guard of honour. The club will decide if it is necessary.”
